This is me on Fire Island.
Kyle and I have now been on Long Island for a full year... and I do mean the year has been full. We bought a lovely house in Patchogue, on the south shore of the island. We've really enjoyed living here-- the house is spacious, with a nice-sized yard (which has been tricky to keep mowed to the neighbors' satisfaction) and we are at a walking distance from plenty of good restaurants and bars on Main Street. We've gradually made some friends, which makes all the difference.
I have been working at Freudenthal & Elkowitz Consulting Group, an environmental consulting firm, for just over six months now. After doing a few years of web and communications work, it's refreshing to get back to something that actually relates to my course of study. I mostly do Phase I and Phase II Environmental Site Assessments, along with remediation work. Basically, when a previously-industrialized property goes up for sale, the buyer is required to investigate what environmental issues may exist (mostly to protect the banks that fork up the dough). We do those investigations, and if any issues are found, we typically follow up with the remediation.
I'm also doing a bit of freelance web design for Michael Fields Agricultural Institute on the side. It is a sustainable agriculture non-profit organization where I did an internship a few years back. Since I didn't end up going into organic farming myself, I feel like this is my way of "giving back."
Kyle has been thriving at Brookhaven National Labs as a post-doc and Goldhaber Fellow with the high-energy physics group. Yeah, he's a big smarty-pants. He has an extensive website full of musings, photos and other fun stuff, so check it out if you feel like wiling away a couple of hours.
I just implemented this design to my website. My previous design was very barebones (i.e., boring) because I was trying to be a big purist. With this one I'm trying to hit the happy medium between design and CSS 'righteousness.' If you have any suggestions, please feel free to contact me.
